Henry
Henry joined The Guitar Gym in 2021, bringing an impressive academic background and a versatile approach to coaching. He holds a Bachelor of Music from QUT and a Diploma of Jazz Performance from JMI, both completed with high distinction. His expertise spans genres including rock, pop, blues, classical, country, funk, and jazz. While his primary instrument is guitar, Henry is also skilled in bass and vocals, enhancing his teaching versatility across various musical contexts.
Henry’s personal influences cover a wide array of artists, from the intricate fingerstyle work of José González and Joe Pass to the singer-songwriter charm of Ben Howard and Matt Corby. Currently, he draws inspiration from jazz and blues, fingerstyle guitar, and singer-songwriter styles, blending these influences into his lessons. As a regular performer under Henry Wilkinson Music, he plays at events and venues across Brisbane, often as part of a jazz duo. He also explores his creativity through his synth-pop project, Raynr, where he writes and records original music, showcasing his passion for production and composition.
At The Guitar Gym, Henry values a client-led approach. “My role is to help people find the music they connect with and guide them on their path to reaching their goals,” he explains. Henry’s coaching style is flexible and collaborative, encouraging guitarists to explore different styles and techniques, from classical fingerstyle to jazz improvisation. For those unsure of where to start, he introduces them to a range of musical genres, allowing each person to discover their unique musical interests.
For Henry, teaching music isn’t just about skill development; it’s about creating an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. “I’ve experienced my fair share of unengaging music lessons, so I strive to make learning guitar different for my clients – practical, fun, and centred around what excites them about music,” he shares. By focusing on practical techniques, songwriting, composition, and even recording, Henry ensures that each session is both rewarding and aligned with his clients’ individual ambitions.
Playing music, Henry believes, brings immense joy, meaning, and personal growth. “Music has given me a way to express myself and face new challenges,” he says, “and I want to share that with others.” Whether you’re a beginner or advancing your skills, Henry’s supportive approach offers a path to meaningful musical development. Join him at The Guitar Gym, and let his expertise and enthusiasm for music inspire your journey.
